The Cinemagic Theater is 113 years old and counting. Thus, the research process for this theater has been complicated and time consuming, although deeply interesting. The theater has had eight owners and been renamed eight times.

The Granada Theatre, established in 1929, sits proudly in The Dalles, Oregon. The theater featured a moorish revival architecture style when it was first built, meaning it was grandiose, regal, and stood out nicely within the city. The exterior architecture was admired by many, and the interior was enjoyable and comforting. The exterior featured domed towers and arched windows, leaning heavily into the theme. When the 1950s rolled around, it was time for a change in scenery. The Granada had an art deco makeover.

Children going to the movies is never going to go out of style. Families bring their kids to theaters so that movies can be enjoyed altogether. At Tower Theatre, children have always been welcome. Children were often admitted free at the theatre for special events, but prices were cheapest for kids. Price reductions happened in 1940 where matinees became cheaper than regular showings. Children's tickets would cost 10 cents at any time of the day, but were only available on bargain nights which were Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Something that really caught my attention while I was doing the research on this theatre was the fact that they would promote the movies that would play that specific night with a lot of cool posters and advertisers, pictures that you can see down bellow, back in Romania we would advertise things in a different manner, commercial wise, also seeing the advertisers in America caught my attention, my friends also they would sometimes do research on a movie and they would find these cool advertisers and teasers for the movies.

About This Project

What is the Oregon Theater Project?

The Oregon Theater Project provides a historical sketch of movie theaters in Oregon from the beginning of cinema at the end of the 19th century through the "silent era" (1896-1930). The website aims to document the history of moviegoing in Oregon–why people went to the movies, where people watched them, and what people thought about them. Movie theaters were often a vital part of the social and economic life within communities, and movies were available in towns of all sizes throughout Oregon.
