The Pine Motor Drive-in theater was built on 12-acres. Prior to opening, the land was cleared, drained, graded, and graveled in order to provide cars with smooth movement and a clear view of the screen. On entrance, cars entered through a "pine" themed two-lane box office in order to efficiently manage traffic before a show. Loudspeakers as well as Motiograph in-car speakers were used in order to maximize audio output during screenings.

Cinema 21 is a prolific theater in the heart of one of Portland's most historic neighborhoods. Located on 21st Avenue, the theater opened in 1925 as a silent film house, and despite multiple re-openings across the decades, it has become a staple in the hearts of the Portland film community, known for featuring independent, local, and historic films. Due to the theater's long-lasting history, programming has varied drastically over the years, coinciding with changing trends in the film industry.

About This Project

What is the Oregon Theater Project?

The Oregon Theater Project provides a historical sketch of movie theaters in Oregon from the beginning of cinema at the end of the 19th century through the "silent era" (1896-1930). The website aims to document the history of moviegoing in Oregon–why people went to the movies, where people watched them, and what people thought about them. Movie theaters were often a vital part of the social and economic life within communities, and movies were available in towns of all sizes throughout Oregon.
