Initial Research on the Savoy Theater

Central Point, located near the border of Medford, Oregon is host to a one Savoy Theatre (1912-1917). Although this town is not very popular in regards to other Oregon cities, Savoy Theatre was among their few forms of entertainment. Whether this theatre was host to its local high schools Glee club, or for its spectacular plays, it was seen as a community forum where townspeople could get their fill of performances. Located in this picture was just one example of the events that would be held at this theatre.

First Impressions about The Star Theater in Bend

The Star Theater (or Theatre, both spellings are used in primary sources) opened on July 5th, 1911. The attached news clipping is the first mention of the Star in the Bend Bulletin. The announcement is simple and includes key information like the proprietors, Hill and Newman, and that their intention is to show only high class films approved by state censorship boards. To start my research into the Star, I’ve dived into the Historic Oregon Newspapers database to explore the news coverage about the theater. From my initial searches I have gathered a lot of fascinating information.

Exploring the Heilig Theater- Behind the Scenes

I have recently been researching The Heilig Theater for the Oregon Theater Project. Throughout my research, I have come across a plethora of interesting information, though I have also run into some struggles while trying to research the information I am looking for. The research process for me so far has been tedious, yet exciting, and I have learned a lot about Nickelodeons and theaters in general through my findings.

Researching The Star Theater that once existed in Astoria, Oregon

I chose to research The Star Theater in Astoria Oregon because I grew up there and I was curious to know the history of one of the theaters that once existed there. So far the research process has been pretty smooth and I have been able to find quite a bit of relative information that provides a deeper understanding of what kinds of events took place at The Star.

The Pioneer of Moving Pictures

For Pendleton, Oregon, "the Pastime Theatre is the pioneer moving picture house in the city.” Besides being able to see a moving picture, the place in which you see it has a profound effect on the viewing experience overall. According to Ina Rae Hark, “Many aspects of exhibition sites work subtly to construct he viewing experience…” (Hark 2).

Medford's Page Theatre Orientalization/Frontier Program

For my post, I chose an ad promoting a program at the Page Theatre in Medford that was published by the Medford Mail Tribune in 1913. It is an interesting artifact for several reasons: one of which is its design. Rather than putting the date, choosing to just have "TONIGHT" could make the reader feel as though it is an event they don't want to miss out on.
