Hill Theatre Research Process

I am currently doing research on the Hill Theatre that was in operation in Hillsboro, Oregon, from roughly 1937 to 1977. At the moment, the building where the Hill Theatre lived is now an antique store; the physical architecture of the space, however, is the same as it was when it was used as a movie theater. Through basic Google searches with the keywords, I was able to find some basic information. For example, it was a one-room theatre that sat about 480 people with balcony seating. They charged 10c per child, 35c for adults, and 45c for loge seats. It was located at 135 NE Third in Downtown.

The mayor of Hillsboro at the time, Orange Phelps, was the owner of the theatre, and another just a street down called the Venetian. The Venetian was more popular when the Hill Theatre opened on Christmas Day 1937. Since the Mayor was well-liked, all the films shown were family-friendly. At the beginning of the theatre's life, it showed a lot of romances and dramas/comedies. But later on, they started showing a lot of Westerns and action films.

Finding those more detailed pieces of information was a bit harder and required more analysis of old newspaper ads. Not to mention, I spent a chunk of time diving into old Hillsboro archives. Since the Hill Theatre was in the shadow of the Venetian, all the ads for the Hill had one for the Venetian right next to it. But the further I got in the archive, the bigger the Hill ads got, and it became easier. I am still digging to find things like old photographs, but so far, the research is very fun and not too demanding.
